Just recently, Finance Puzzle was listed in the personal finance blog listings for PopTopRanks. This directory of top sites listed by popularity (determined by # of feed subscribers) is a great tool for bloggers and readers.
For readers, PopTopRanks provides you a one stop service to list out all of the blogs in your interest, potentially uncovering some new ones that you weren’t aware of…
For bloggers, the list provides you an update of the competition and where you stand in the blog market. For FinancePuzzle, I notice that I have a significant amount of work to do to be considered one of the top finance blogs on the web.
With a goal of trying to improve my rankings and connecting this to some relevant MBA material that I have learned, below you will find the summary statistics that I calculated to use as a starting point in understanding the market and establishing a goal.
Below you will find a histogram chart of the 133 personal finance blogs that were listed on PopTopRanks as of July 13th, 2008.
If you are not familiar with histograms, the height of each bar (y-axis) represents how many blogs are in the predetermined range (x-axis). The range is highlighted in the x-axis label, e.g. the first bar represents the 3 of blogs that fall into a subscriber count from 0 to 250. The second bar starts at 251 and end at 500 feed subscribers, etc….
The next exhibit highlights some summary statistics of the data set, in a numerical format.
You will find the average (aka mean) of the 133 data set equals 1,730.60 readers. The median of the dataset, or the middle value, is currently 446 readers. This exhibit also highlights that the top 7 personal finance blogs represent 5% of the entire list, with GetRichSlowly topping the list with a maximum of 57,231 readers.
With the 25 current readers and all of the info above, I would like to increase my subscriber count to 100 by the end of 2008. From there, I will set my 2009 goals at the beginning of the new year.
Please subscribe if you enjoyed this article and would like to help me reach my goal.

This is an interesting look at PopTopRanks. But remember also that these 133 blogs are just a small subset of the entire population (may be not even 10%). But interesting nonetheless.

Agreed Pinyo….This is only the personal finance section of PopTopRanks as this site includes many other blogging categories….I will first try to increase my ranking in the personal finance category and then I can concentrate on the entire web after that…..lol

One of the things you can’t really see from the data is how many subscribers overlap. I’m willing to bet the top 7 PF bloggers have much more than just 5% of the readership out there.

Neat chart. Statistics are useful tools, and I agree, can give us some targets. I am hoping PopTopRanks eventually adds other statistics, such as average # visitors per day, or # views, or # comments.
